As a cancer survivor, I hear this question all the time: “A friend of mine just found out she has cancer. What do I say? How can I help?” I know from experience the struggle to figure out how to support a friend during difficult times.
Five years ago, I spent several months fighting a rare and aggressive cancer called angiosarcoma. As a survivor, I minister to young women with cancer and those who are walking alongside a close friend through cancer. I hear this all the time: “A friend of mine was just diagnosed with cancer. How can I help? How do I support her? I’m so afraid I’ll do or say the wrong thing!”
Friends who are armed with information can love and serve their cancer-fighting friends more confidently and compassionately. When I speak with friends of cancer patients, I describe the emotions, fears, experiences and challenges that accompany cancer diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. I give practical suggestions for what to say, what not to say, how to serve, and how to pray.
This book is the conversation I wish I could have with the close friends of every woman battling cancer.
In this book, I weave together bits of my cancer story and how my friends helped me, along with practical advice and suggestions for friends of those with cancer. My goal is to empower women to confidently and compassionately minister to their friends with cancer. It is a quick read and could probably be read in one evening.
The book is written from a Christian perspective, but many of the principles in the book will benefit readers with different beliefs. I’ve also included a worksheet in the back (also downloadable here) to assist readers in developing a plan to help their friend.
I pray that Loving Your Friend Through Cancer will encourage cancer-fighters and those who care about them as they walk through cancer together. Click here to order your paperback or download the Kindle version on Amazon!
What are others saying about Loving Your Friend Through Cancer? Here are some excerpts from the five-star Amazon reviews:
“In this engaging cup-of-coffee-with-a-friend, [Marissa] provides the wisdom and caring advice that we need to be a friend that sticks closer than a brother. For the shuttle service for hurting kids or the long distance prayer warrior, this book is a how-to for the hands and feet of Christ in the throes of the cancer battle.”
“[Marissa’s] words of truth, hope, love and grace will help readers encourage their friends and provide support for physical, logistical, emotional and spiritual needs. The action tips at the end of each chapter also give readers viable ways to immediately begin assisting loved ones who are suffering. I highly recommend this book and will be purchasing it for my friends!”
“I really wish I’d had this book a few years ago as I walked alongside a dear friend going through cancer. I pray I never need this book again, but I am so thankful that I have this great resource if I do. I will definitely be buying this for other people!”
“I don’t think I have ever read anything so practical and so helpful in dealing with ANYONE who has been diagnosed with a life-threatening disease (not just cancer). I love the chapter on knowing where you are in their circle of friends. That was so helpful to know if I’m doing too much (or in my case scared I’m being nosy) or if I’m not doing enough.”
“The author provides an overarching framework that helps you understand what your friend is going through, but then dives into the practical–giving specific ways to help, listing specific things to say (or not say), and equipping you to be the hands and feet of Jesus as you minister to your hurting friend.”
“What an empowering tool to have in your pocket in a situation where things are just plain hard. Marissa leads us through a Biblical journey of what God thinks about suffering and how we can pray for our friend . . . Because of this book I now feel so much more prepared and capable to be a true friend and resource to someone I meet fighting the battle of cancer. This book will remain a reference for me when those times occur in life.”
